Swami Shree Nityanand Swami was the great personality of Swaminarayan Sampradaya. He has been nicknamed as ‘Ved Vyasa of Shree Swaminarayan Sampradaya’ due to his great learning and erudition. His art of oratory could shut up the opponents very effectively. Therefore this great saint has successfully replied squarely all the challenges which have come against Shree Swaminarayan Sampradaya and has unfurled the victorious flag of the Sampradaya in all the directions.

Swamiji was born to his mother Virja in the house of the Brahmin Vishnu Sharma in village Datia (Lucknow) on Chaitra Sud 9, Samvat 1849. In his childhood he was known as Dinmani. Growing like a moon, Yagnopavit (holy-threading) ceremony was performed to him at the age of 8 years.

He went to Kashi for specialized study. The Goddess Sarswati (Goddess of Learning) blessed all her blessings and powers on Dinmani and a desire to meet the Supreme Lord arose in his mind. On his pilgrimage, he had Darshan of Shree Hari at Una. Love and affection of the earlier births arose in him and after taking Diksha he was named as ‘Nityanand’.

Shree Hari sent him to Purushottam Bhatt of Nandol for further study and specialized study of the scriptures and blessed him that no other learned person would win over him on this earth and he would ever remain victorious in the field of knowledge.
After having blessings from Shree Hari, Nityanand Swami set out for intellectual victory of the world and made experts and erudite persons of Shrinagar, Jungadh, Jamnagar, Gondal, Khambhat, Rajkot, Botad etc. taste the defeat.

Credit of developing a small plant of Satsang into a shady tree in the place like Umreth, where influence of Advait Vedantists was tremendous, goes to Nityanand Swami. By constantly studying the scriptures and having practical experience of the world by roaming in his incessant pilgrimage, Nityanand Swami has made Shree Swaminarayan Sampradaya very well known. Not only this, he has also written the great books like ‘Shree Hari Digvijiay’. ‘Commentary on Shandilya-Sutra’ and ‘Satsangijivan Tika’ are his well known books.

Till the last breath of his life, he was worried about the Sampradaya. He recommended Satsang to Acharya Shree Raghuvirji Maharaj and passed away to Akshardhaam in meditation in Siddhasan posture on Magsar Sud 11 Samvat 908. His funeral ceremony was performed in Gyan baug.
